Emilio’s Cafe is a south Dallas gem

Living down in the Cedars, I’ve got a little spot I love called Emilio’s. Killer breakfast tacos, and GREAT caldo de pollo (Chicken Soup). They open early for breakfast, and close for the day around 3pm, and are not open on Sundays. Make sure to check out their hours before heading over. But it’s cheap and cozy, and the staff are the nicest people ever. Especially Ms Nellie.

Oishii sushi, still rolling up some tasty fish

We had a great dinner at Oishii Sushi over on Wycliff at the Tollroad last night. More than just sushi, this Pan Asian restaurant has it all. Pho, Honey Chicken, Spring Rolls, Fried Rice, and of course the delicious sushi I took pictures of. The word is out on the place, and it is always pretty full, but if you’re willing to sit at the sushi bar you can generally walk in and wait less than 30 minutes. They always have consistently strong service too, but the last visit was even a little above and beyond the usual. Check em out, they kick ass for sure.

Dairy-ette has been grilling burgers in East Dallas for over 60 years

I’m embarrassed to admit I had never been to Dairy-ette prior to yesterday, but I will most certainly return soon! This East Dallas gem is over sixty years old, having opened its doors in 1956. According to those in the know, it hasn’t changed a bit since then, and it shows. After ordering a double cheese burger (add mayo) and a grilled cheese, I had no idea my favorite part would be the root beer.

Don’t get me wrong, everything was fabulous, but that root beer was just something special. Thick, but still crisp. Served with no ice, but ice cold in a frosted mug with little frozen bits of deliciousness floating around. As Nick Rallo wrote for the Dallas Observer, it’s “the martini of root beer”.

The double cheese burger served simply with no frills, the old fashioned way. Unlike most restaurants, the magic isn’t in the ingredients. It’s gotta be the grill. The grilled cheese had a gooey center between two perfectly crisped pieces of white bread. Two unexciting ingredients coming together just right causing a single bite to take you back in time to your childhood, or beyond. If you don’t make it over to the east side very often, it’s worth a special trip. This place as been killing it for longer than most, and is definitely a big part of why #dallaskicksass

Hudson House is a great spot

I had a great lunch today at the Hudson House over on Lovers Lane near the Tollroad. I tried to be healthy and just get a salad, but since I had heard such great things about the burger my friend and I split one of those too.

I got the Hudson Salad, fried chicken nuggets, avocados, tomatoes, a little bacon and a green goddess dressing. I love a good salad, and this will definitely be included in my favorites going forward.

The burger has two thin patties, stacked with cheese, pickles, and a special sauce. This burger must the grown up version of the old Balls Hamburgers “Little Leaguers”.

The Hudson House is from the same family that brought us East Hampton Sandwiches, and they bring their same quality approach to dining to this upscale table service joint, that is just casual enough to be approachable to all.

Harlowe MXM is an excellent new addition to the Deep Ellum dining scene

I had the pleasure of dining at Harlowe MXM last night. With its front doors on the corner of Malcom X & Main (Get it?), the sister restaurant to Bread Winners Cafe & Bakery Harlowe is a magnificent facility that is both elegant, but fitting for the red brick and old buildings of Deep Ellum. I need to go back and take more pics of the building itself, it’s that cool of a space. I’ve had drinks on their enormous rooftop bar, brunch on their street level breezeway, and then dinner last night in the main dining room. I still haven’t had a chance to check out their little tucked away bar, but I’ll be back.

We started things off with some New England Oysters and Chorizo Churros and a few cocktails. We ate early (6:45) so we were able to watch the place fill up. It didn’t quite seem to hit max capacity, so feel free to walk in without a reservation, but the energy was very lively driven largely by the New Orleans style playlist and frequent dance moves from the host staff.

For the entree round the fish feature was Grouper with an okra presentation, my glorious burger, and a Tri Tip plate my other buddy had the Mushroom Demi put on the side. 🤦🏻‍♂️ We also had an unpictured kale salad (my buddy dove right in).

My burger was crazy good, and had steep expectations with the $16 price tag. Double meat and double cheese by default, this burger has the spirit of Keller’s with cheffy ingredients. Crispy edges on the patties, this burger is up there with the best in the neighborhood. A list that seems to get longer by the minute.

In only their 14th week of operation, this place will be around for a while. Next time you’re looking for a place to go, check out Harlowe MXM in Deep Ellum. It’s definitely part of why #DallasKicksAss.

BrainDead Brewing releases its winter menu for 2018

I checked out the new Winter Menu at BrainDead Brewing down in Deep Ellum today. These guys have a surprisingly awesome kitchen for a place with so much emphasis on beer and brewing.

The Korean Fried Chicken is something I’m going to wake up thinking about for sure. Salty and sweet, with a crispy flaky crust over juicy chicken.

Bangers & Mash are back again, and and better than ever. I want to bathe in this sauce. I’d light candles and everything.

There are also new things like a Reuben, Meatball Sandwich, Chicken Fried Steak, and more. Since they are a brewpub, there’s always new beers available too.

I had Mechanical Advantage, a German Pilsner for $3 since they do “Lunch Beers” for $3 from 11am-4pm Monday through Friday. These guys are definitely part of why Dallas Kicks Ass

Oni Ramen in Deep Ellum is open late on weekends

One of Deep Ellum’s newest and most well received restaurants is Oni Ramen. Chef Owner Jesus Garcia brought Fort Worth’s favorite Ramen shop to Deep Ellum, and it has been a hit. With late hours on weekends (Friday till 4am and Saturday till 3am) this place is almost always fairly full and seating limited to the rails, but there’s rarely much of a wait for food. Don’t let their success slow you down, the hustle and bustle adds to the Ramen experience I’d say. Pictured is the Kyushu Tonkotsu with the iconic oil slick of their black garlic. We also got the Oni Reaper and Tan Tan Men. They have Chashu rice Bowls, and brothless offerings as well.

Ordering is fairly straightforward through the digital kiosk if you can’t find a spot at the full service bar. Also, take out works well here as they package their broth separately. I love heat, but even sometimes three out of five is a little too much for me. Fortunately they offer spice on the side.
